GREAT THANKSGIVING FOR ADVENT

  The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

   Lift up your hearts.

We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give thanks and praise.

And so, with your people on earth, and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn, saying:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.  Hosanna in the highest.

And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts of love and grace, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving, as children of your covenant, in union with Christ’s love for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith.

Christ has died.  Christ has risen.  Christ will come again.

It is a great service to invite your friends with children as well. The 7:00 p.m. service will be the Traditional Candlelight service. Please come, invite a friend, and let's do Christmas together.

Offering Envelopes If you would like to continue using the offering envelopes for your weekly giving please contact Lisa in the church office. Because so many envelopes go unused we are doing things differently this coming year.

A huge thank you to those who have volunteered to help usher for our worship services. We are still in need of assistant ushers for the 8:30 am and the 11:00 am service the 2nd Sunday of each month.  Beginning in November we will need four ushers for the 11:00 service the second Sunday. We would also like to increase our pool of substitutes to help out when needed. Please prayerfully consider helping out with this important ministry of our church.  Please contact Craig Sherman, if you wish to help out with this ministry. Email: cs2254@yahoo.com or 665-7182.

Advent Retreat The stories about Jesus’ mother, Mary, from the Gospel of Luke provide the framework for the Advent retreat “The Joys of Mary,” at the Benedictine Peace Center at Sacred Heart Monastery.  The morning of reflection, presented by S. Mary Jo Polak, OSB, is on Saturday, Dec. 9th 9:30 to Noon, with check-in beginning at 9am.  For more information, go to https://yanktonbenedictines.org/advent-retreat/.  To register call 605-668-6292 or e-mail BenedictinePeaceCtr@mtmc.edu by Dec. 6th.

Advent Study For our Advent study this year we will be using Adam Hamilton's book "Faithful, Christmas through the eyes of Joseph" We will be meeting the following Wednesday evenings at 7:15pm in the Church Lounge, Nov. 29th, Dec. 6th, Dec. 13th and Dec. 20th.  Cost of the book is $15. In this study, you will understand how Joseph's place in the nativity story is much like our own. In life, we encounter circumstances that we would have never chosen for ourselves. At times it can be tempting just to walk away. Joseph provides us a great example of humbly obeying God even when we don't understand and faithfully moving forward in the strength that God provides. Exchange your doubt for courage this Advent and Christmas season.

Christmas Celebration Sunday

Christmas time is a busy season with all of us, we are all going in different directions to spend time with loved ones and families. But many times we miss the chance to celebrate the joy of Christmas with our Church Family, so this year we are having a Church Christmas Celebration Sunday on Sunday, December 10th.   It will be a day of worship, fellowship, fun, and celebration.

We will start our celebration with the band “One Way Up” joining us for worship at both services that morning.  At 3pm we will have our Sunday School Christmas program.  Following the program, we will have a Potluck Supper in Wesley Hall. Following the supper our Jr. and Sr. High Youth Groups will have games and activities for the kids. So break out your most festive Christmas sweater and join us as we celebrate the birth of Jesus!  Sign-up sheets for the potluck will be in Wesley Hall starting Sunday, November 26th

Giving Thanks for Dry Bottoms a diaper shower for the Contact Center. Yankton Lions Club is partnering with 1st United Methodist Church Sunday School classes for a Diaper Shower for the Contact Center. November 12th to December 10th.  Donations can be dropped off at the Church Lobby 9am to 4pm weekly or on Sunday Morning. There are totes marked for the different classes and The Lions, place your donation in the tote you wish to help. Or you may give donation to any Lions Member. Last year over 2000 diapers were collected for the little people in our community. The goal is to double that number. Larger size diapers are needed most.

- Angel Tree is up and ready. Kindly take an angel, or two, purchase an age-appropriate gift, place the tag on the gift and have it back to church by Dec. 10th. If that date changes, we will keep you posted. The Christmas gifts will be going to Tree of Life.

- Prison Ministry Team There is one opportunity left this year to be part of the church services at the Federal Prison Camp. On December 31st, FUMC will be leading the service and anyone interested can participate. A recent background information sheet will need to be filled out and given to Corey. There are some located on the information desk or in the church office. If you have any questions, contact Corey, Bob Thue, or Paula Keehr.
